Newcomers: Overview of Needs and Available Community Support

by: Équipe du 211

For the beneficiaries, this approach provides assistance in finding resources that meet their needs. For our service and policymakers, it helps collect anonymized data on the needs expressed by the population, the available resources, and any potential service gaps.

This project takes place in four stages, each targeting a distinct group of individuals, namely:

  • People aged 70 and over
  • Those seeking housing assistance
  • Those looking for food assistance
  • Newly arrived individuals in the region

The fourth phase, focusing on newly arrived individuals, is now complete. A total of 131 people received follow-up services. Here are some sociodemographic data.

Numerous Needs

A total of 256 needs were expressed by the individuals who benefited from the follow-up. Our team provided 532 referrals, with the main ones being:

  • La Maisonnée
  • Support Centre for Immigrant Communities
  • INICI: Immigrate, Integrate, Innovate
  • Association of Refugees and Immigrants Without Borders
  • Mada Community Centre
  • Welcome for Immigrants of Eastern Montreal

Among all the individuals followed up, 59% received help for all their needs (29%) or some of them (22%) or secured an appointment (8%) through the resources referred by 211. 14% found help through other resources, and 13% did not find assistance. The remaining percentage stopped responding to our calls or requested to end the follow-up.

Our counsellors always strive to find alternative solutions when the initial ones do not work out. Thanks to their efforts and the organizations that go above and beyond to meet the demand, we can see that only 13% of the requests went unmet.

However, we continue to strive towards fulfilling 100% of the needs.
