Culture, sports and recreation: free or low-cost activities

By: Alexandre Haslin, Maria Rigas

The fabric of the Greater Montréal community has put everything in place to meet the population's basic needs, such as, food, housing and even material aid. However, access to culture, sports and recreation is also indispensable for everyone's well-being. Because money should not be an obstacle, many resources aim at providing free or low-cost access to a multitude of diverse and varied activities.

Activities for everyone

Families

There are a lot of resources suited for the whole family in Greater Montréal. For example, community centers offer parent-child activities, art workshops, sports matches, guided tours, concerts, theater evenings … the list is long! These resources can be offered by community centers, but also by municipalities and boroughs whose mandate is also to promote access to culture, sports and recreation (see paragraph below).

Libraries, as well, have numerous activities for the whole family, such as book clubs, movie nights and other recreational workshops.

Seniors

Many resources offer activities for seniors. There is something for everyone: card games, dance classes, bocce, cooking workshops, sports, nature getaways... Intergenerational activities are also organized, promoting cultural exchanges between the young and not so young.

Many activities are also listed on the FADOQ (seniors' organization in Canada) website. There are outings, trips, cultural and sports activities, shows and much more! Go to FADOQ'S calendar of events.

Think about volunteering! Many retired people regularly get involved in volunteering. This can enable them to stay active -if their health allows it- and to beak their isolation all while participating in recreational, cultural, artistic, and even sports activities according to the chosen mission. To find a volunteering mission that matches your interests, go to the jebenevole.ca platform or contact us at 211.

Youth

Among resources available for youth, there are youth centers. These living spaces offer many activities throughout the year, including summer programming. Art workshops, sports, cultural outings, music, theater.... something for everybody! To find out more, you can read our article on youth centers.

Day camps also allow both children and adolescents to socialize and have access to many activities in safe and friendly environments. Here again, culture, sports and arts are part of it. Certain camps are more specialized, as is the case with GUEPE camps, who are devoted to the discovery of nature thanks to fun and educational activities offered by their team of nature educators.

Resouces adapted to people with a handicap

Many resources offer activities and infrastructures adapted to people with a handicap whether it is physical, intellectual, autism spectrum disorders …

Please note that this does not mean that the other resources mentioned in this article are unavailable to people with a handicap. Do not hesitate to contact each organization to find out about their procedures regarding someone with a handicap. As well, we specify which organizations are wheelchair accessible on their files. They are identifiable thanks to this pictogram:

Think of your municipality

Municipalities offer residents many facilities and free or low-cost activities: sports grounds, pools, exhibitions and museums, cultural centers, libraries ….

Many cities also offer a system of cards that give free or discounted access to certain facilities and activities. These cards can be purchased for an annual sum but are usually free for the town's residents. In Montréal, the card is called Accès Montréal Card, in Laval, Avantages Laval Card, and Carte Accès for Longueuil ...

Cultural Centers

Cultural centers are spaces in which many art and cultural activities take place. In Montréal, each borough has its own cultural center with its own activities. Through this network, the City says that each year they show more than 2 000 performances and screenings, 150 exhibitions, 1 500 accompaniment activities and workshops, reaching 600 000 spectators and visitors. Go to your city's website for more information.
